The Gazette. Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee breathed his last on August 31 at age 84. His son Abhijit Mukherjee took to twitter to inform the sad news. The veteran politician had tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment at Army Hospital. At the hospital, he also underwent surgery for a blood clot in the brain.
"With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India," Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted.
Pranab Mukherjee political career began as a protege of Indira Gandhi. He stood beside Gandhi during the Emergency and came to be known as a crisis manager who commanded the respect of all and had friends across the aisle. In his five-decade-long of a political career, the Indian National Congress stalwart wore many hats and served the country as a Member of Parliament for 37 years. He was conferred the Bharat Ratna last year.
